Only Maoris Can Fish

August 26, 2021

No scruples of the apartheid agenda will stand in its way. Even during Level 4 when everyone is locked down there is an exception for people of a certain race…

“Fishing and whitebaiting”

“At Alert Level 4, recreational fishing and whitebaiting is not allowed, except for Māori customary fishing and food gathering.” – covid19.govt.nz

What happened to the New Zealand with one standard of citizenship, one law for all? Weren’t we told that such divisions were the reason for the Springbok Tour riots? That the social justice of not excluding or privileging any race or group was important enough to fight each other about? Glass and bombs on rugby fields. The Labour 4.0 Prime Minister, David Lange, said…

“I know that violations of human rights occur in many countries other than South Africa. And I share the concerns of New Zealanders of goodwill at that fact. But only South Africa, and no other country, has entrenched racism in its constitution and in the law of the land. Apartheid is a special challenge to NZ where we are trying to build a genuine multi-racial society” – David Lange, response to letter from KR Bolton (1985)

Yet, then, Labour 5.0 both Helen Clark and Michael Cullen announced a specific apartheid policy, ‘Closing the Gaps’. Winston Peters, for one, wouldn’t allow it.

As we have seen with Labour 6.0, Ardern and Robinson have rebooted this apartheid with another name, He Puapua. Winston Peters, for one, wouldn’t allow it. Ah, but he’s gone now.

Politicians use whatever pretext works in the moment to take power away from you and give it to themselves. What works for them right now is apartheid so here it is, once again.

Update 28 August: Labour Six have just backed down on race-based fishing rules during lockdown..

“2:45pm 28 August 2021: We updated this page to clarify the rules for fishing and whitebaiting at Alert Level 4.”
All reference to Maori customary fishing has been removed. Must come from the top. The Prime Minister is fond of starting sentences with “I’ve been really clear that..” This isn’t a ‘clarification’, this is another backflip! “Maori with customary rights can fish” actually means “all New Zealanders can fish.” Thanks for “clearing” that up.
