Here’s a typical picture of one guy working on a civil construction job with 10 others watching on. We see it the world over, including here in New Zealand. Contracts like these allow governments to launder money and payola their friends and fund re-election. They take longer and cost more than could possibly make sense.

To hide this more people than are required are hired and then go under-employed. It’s great cover. Nobody, even when they see pictures like the above all over the world, with their own eyes, can believe the truth.

One executive at his desk and a couple of Daves getting busy with the equipment could not possibly justify the McDuck fortune poured onto these projects. But add in some more bodies for signalling purposes and everyone is automatically cool with it.

There is certainly a ruling principle here in terms of fooling the human mind in making up for, or augmenting, one area of life by exaggerating another. It’s a form of Magical Thinking. I knew a girl with a bad essay so she wrote many pages of junk thinking the quantity of work would fool the marker and make up for the lack of quality. I know the Ancient Greeks and Classical Maoris had itinerant mourners who could be hired to come to funerals to cry and wail and self-mutilate about someone they didn’t even know but their services supposedly helped pay the debt of grief. Men and women whose youth are failing will over-compensate with makeup and clothing, cars and bling. People tattoo their bodies as a way to exile thoughts and feelings they cannot mentally entertain onto their exteriors. Bad parents give their children money and gifts instead of their love and their time. People take drugs or gamble or bully etc. as a substitute path to get the neurotransmitter rewards they need rather than achieving them through virtue. People become politicians or celebrities for the same reason or surround themselves with hollow friendships or romantic relationships to replace quantity with quality.

This ‘Dave’ situation in the picture is a symptom of superstitious people running from their own potential, running from reality. It’s a wonder our species has the carrying capacity to produce enough for a society while taking so many steps backwards like this. We could be better!
