The Public Expulsion of Evils

Because the current COVID-19 Crisis in New Zealand fails to make sense from a rational stand point might we look for the logic in an irrational one? The first and most comprehensive guide to practical magic is the author of The Golden Bough, James Frazer. Although he writes a great deal about pre-civilised methods none of his extensive literature quite presages our cultural and political reaction to the ‘epidemic’. That task is left for the understanding reader by applying Frazer’s discovered rules of magic.

However, there is one passage that comes closer than the rest. The following comes from Chapter 56. The Public Expulsion of Evils and is the case of old Indonesia…

“When a village has been visited by a series of disasters or a severe epidemic, the inhabitants of Minahassa in Celebes lay the blame upon the devils who are infesting the village and who must be expelled from it. Accordingly, early one morning all the people, men, women, and children, quit their homes, carrying their household goods with them, and take up their quarters in temporary huts which have been erected outside the village.”

The infested village is placed in “Lockdown” and the inhabitants are expelled to “Managed Isolation and Quarantine” (MIQ) under military control. The “temporary huts” are hotels.

“Here they spend several days, offering sacrifices and preparing for the final ceremony.”

The infested are required to stay in MIQ a minimum of 14 days. If you do not comply then habias corpus kicks in at 28 days and you may then leave. During this time the expelled, of which there are tens of thousands of us, offer sacrifices including separation from friends and family and employment. The infested are subjected to study and government food and government inquisition. The greatest sacrifice is their liberty.

“At last the men, some wearing masks, others with their faces blackened, and so on, but all armed with swords, guns, pikes, or brooms, steal cautiously and silently back to the deserted village. Then, at a signal from the priest, they rush furiously up and down the streets and into and under the houses yelling and striking on walls, doors, and windows, to drive away the devils.”

Roving enforcement warriors have, indeed, been the next phase and nowhere so remarkably as in Melbourne. Blackened and masked men stalk about the deserted ‘locked down’ central village. When they have their way, as in the earlier days, all is quiet. When they meet resistance, such as people at large who are not complying or, especially, those who protest the magic spells being cast, they are met as devils and driven away. This has often become violent but less often so, thus far, in New Zealand, thank goodness.

“Next, the priests and the rest of the people come with the holy fire and march nine times round each house and thrice round the ladder that leads up to it, carrying the fire with them. Then they take the fire into the kitchen, where it must burn for three days continuously. The devils are now driven away, and great and general is the joy.”

Our “holy fire” are the “vaccines” and “deep cleanings” performed, both, many times. The infested are expected to be dosed with the holy fire and, to date, twice more over with “booster” shots of “holy fire.” The “priests” we may readily interpret in our times as belonging to the Government Executive and its chosen media and medical anointed ones. The “kitchen” in New Zealand’s mass society context is not an Indonesian food preparation area so much as our modern supermarket. Much attention is centered on our supermarkets who are often the only places permitted to operate during the deserted village stage. At times our supermarkets are “deep cleaned” with the holy fire for days at a time continuously.

Not New Zealand nor any other country has been able to complete the magic spell to the point where the devils are driven away. Neither great nor general is the joy. Nations are in the process of still trying to complete the Elimination Spell, such as New Zealand and Australia, or else have reached the point of abandoning it and going back to regular life as all of us eventually must when this Moral Panic has run its course.
