Where’s My Dementia Money?

November 14, 2020

By NZB3

Why would the government, Labour 6.0, cut funding for brain research into dementia prevention? At a time where we have an ageing population (the Boomers are getting pretty up there now) it makes sense to spend money preventing the many and expensive health ills coming down the mountain.

When it comes to bodies, old folks can easily strain muscles and fracture bones just by falling over in their own homes. That’s why tens of millions are/will be put toward teaching the oldies balance and strength training. If they fall over and don’t die then the Health Ministry will have to fork out hundreds of millions for physiotherapy and orthopedics.

So much for the body, what about the mind?

“Brain disorders currently affect one in five New Zealanders over 65 and it is expected that will increase to one in four by 2036.”

“Professor Cliff Abraham says he was surprised and disappointed not to be selected as a Centre of Research Exellence.”

“Brain Research New Zealand, which is undertaking research into the causes and prevention of ageing-related neurological disorders, was set up in 2015 after being selected as a Centre of Research Excellence in the previous funding round.”- Brain Research New Zealand loses $5m funding, cut a blow for dementia prevention – NZ Herald

Forgive my simple Anarchist snap judgement but that’s really all I know how to do when it comes to politics. Professor Abraham knows this too, or should, since his gaining and keeping jobs like the one he has/had turn on it…

Why would Labour 6.0 keep funding a National 5.0 (2008-2017) project?

When any regime comes into power it needs to smash up old projects and concerns that are pushing wealth and power to a previous regime. Cutting the funding to a John Key era quango is a 101 move.

“Labour 6.0 did not kill off oil and gas exploration just to be popular. They did it to clear out all the old contracts and deals and arrangements belonging to National 5.0 so they could start all over again with their own deals.”- Transition Between Feudal Lords

Likewise, Key’s government gave the boot to as many of the projects and buildings and deals that were opened with red ribbon cuttings by Helen Clark and her gang.

Every new government needs to cut blood flow to the old gang and, where possible, set up new flows of wealth toward their own guys. Professor Cliff Abraham’s patrons did not win the election, his dementia team do not collect $5,000,000.
