– Guest Post by Rose Clark, 8 January 2022

This post has been a long time coming. It is the longest post I have ever written โ€“ those who have read the book will understand why so many words are needed. There is a lot to unpack.
It’s a 7 minute read, and all italicized paragraphs are direct quotes from the book. For over a decade I have heard mostly criticism about Atlas Shrugged. It has been explained to me over the years as: โ€œThe Bible for Libertariansโ€, โ€œAn egotistical and selfish mouthpiece of pro-capitalismโ€ and โ€œLibertarian propaganda containing unrealistic charactersโ€. As you can imagine I was quite interested to read it, based on these reviews. Anything that receives so much criticism will always pique my interest.

Despite my curiosity, I went into this book with a healthy dose of skepticism (a trait in me that will never die regardless of the subject matter) and I came out of it both confounded and comforted. Confounded because much like George Orwellโ€™s 1984, the themes presented, continue to have an uncanny relevance in our current political and social climate (the book was published in 1957). Comforted because the story is a celebration of human ability, resilience and the triumph of the human spirit.

On completion I completely understood why Atlas Shrugged has received so much criticism, and the reason is that the critics have not actually read it. Unless these critics were employed as political/philosophical book reviewers there is no way they would have taken the time to sit down and read a mammoth 1069 pages in small print about a series of characters and subjects they are already predisposed to hate, written by an author that represents Libertarian principles, which they also hate.

One of the strongest Libertarians I know admitted to me recently that he could not get all the way through this book. If a person who agrees with the content โ€“ canโ€™t, then a person who disagrees with the content โ€“ wonโ€™t.

I make these points because no person has the right to criticize (or praise) a book unless they have actually read it.

If I have made a grave error in judgement, and you are indeed a person who has read this book all the way through and still truly hate it, come at me.

For those who are going into this without context, let me help: The protagonists in Atlas Shrugged are hard working, practical individuals who mainly work in the steel and railroad industries. Through their intelligence, hard work, problem solving abilities, ambition and drive โ€“ they have reached a new era in the industrial age where they are now developing more efficient locomotive technology, and inventing a new type of steel โ€“ both huge contributions that have the ability to immensely improve overall quality of life for society. As a by-product of their particular skill sets, and all of their hard work, they have become wealthy, and are continuing to build profit and wealth as they make their technologies more efficient.

The antagonists (referred to as โ€œThe Lootersโ€) are a group of bureaucrats who believe โ€œitโ€™s just not fairโ€ that the hard working protagonists should be allowed to not only attain so much wealth, but also be the biggest players in their respective industries. They say it is not fair for the protagonists to be monopolizing these industries, as it does not give the smaller businesses and other players, an equal opportunity to make wealth.

As a result of this ill informed opinion, they do what bureaucrats do best, and form a bunch of different committees that create regulations and laws, to restrict and control the amount of production and progress that these large businesses are allowed to output. Everything they do, is โ€œfor the good of the peopleโ€. It is very important to them, that they appear constantly to be displaying โ€œvirtue and kind heartedness for societyโ€.

Eventually they begin to, very ineffectively, nationalize these large businesses and the products of their labour, using threats and brute force when they are opposed โ€“ causing so many economical problems, that they single-handedly start to cause the downfall of the economy.

As it turns out, the businesses that were generating the most amount of both production and wealth, and were the most competent in their respective fields, were contributing to the flow of the economy more, than all of the smaller businesses who were less competent, less productive, and not making as much profit. Who wouldโ€™ve thought???

There are two themes in the book I have chosen to elaborate on, applicable to the here and now, in our current day and age โ€“ January 8th, 2022.

1. ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™‡๐™ค๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง๐™จ
The Looters arenโ€™t just evil because they want to tax, acquire, regulate or redistribute your wealth, they are evil because they want to regulate your MIND, and the product of your thoughts.
When they nationalize or tax your assets or material wealth, they are also staking claim to your intellectual property. The message these โ€˜Lootersโ€™ are sending is: the more potential you have; the more skill and hard work you put in to pursue what you are good at, the more you will be penalized, because being more brilliant at something than someone else, simply โ€œis not fair on othersโ€, and life โ€œmust be fairโ€ at all costs, even when that cost is theft, brute force or even death.

The Looters are people who do not produce anything, because it is easier to hold a gun to someoneโ€™s head, and take from them instead โ€œfor the good of the general publicโ€.
They will never try to improve society through the products of their intelligence, effort or labour โ€“ they will simply envy what someone else has, and feel entitled to it because they believe they were born with rightful ownership to both the products of everyone’s labour, and MIND, out of a warped sense of equality.

Society is so attached to appearing virtuous, that they are ready to jump on any group-think bandwagon at a momentโ€™s notice.

To criticize those with wealth because they are not giving their wealth away to those in need; to criticize those who are unvaccinated, because it is selfish to others who have poor health; to criticize independent thought as being unpatriotic, because after all, we are a โ€œteam of five millionโ€, and the most important virtue of all is to โ€œbe kindโ€, and when you disagree, you are not โ€œbeing kindโ€.

Never mind any practical solutions. Never mind using the power of our minds to solve problems. Why do we need to think when we have government?

Itโ€™s our feelings that really matter, and being kind is all we need.

We must, appear to be virtuous, above all else. Reason and rationale, are no longer our friends. Expressing any difference to the status quo will immediately result in the scraping of the proverbial pitchforks along the ground, as The Looters, and the blind followers of Looters prep for their witch hunt against you.

Any time you see an article about Elon Musk, you will undoubtedly be subjected to the sea of hatred, vitriol and judgement that rears its ugly head, like an Irrational Socialist Medusa of the Deep. You disarm one comment with logic, and two Strawmans and Defamations grow back in its place.

โ€œElon Musk is spending his profits on going to space when there are billions of hungry and dying people in the worldโ€.

โ€œElon Musk is the scum of the earth for spending his money on AI, and developing technology that is frivolous and unnecessaryโ€.

I could easily turn this entire review into an article about Elon Musk; but the people out there hating on him for his success, arenโ€™t interested in data or reason.

They knowingly and conveniently overlook the fact that his various businesses provide employment for 110,000 people across the globe. The technology he is developing has the potential to save lives, cure sickness, improve transport and infrastructure, and in general, discover new ways of doing things that civilization desperately needs. He is a man at the forefront of innovation and discovery, who is using his intelligence and work ethic to constantly try to improve and contribute to the world around him. He is a person who believes, โ€œI am, therefore I think. I think, therefore I improveโ€.

If you hate Elon Musk, the only conclusion I can draw is that you have extremely low self-esteem, because the greatest hallmark for a low-tier human being is the resentment of another manโ€™s achievements.

I conclude my review of Atlas Shrugged by requesting that you ask yourself these questions:
– Who are โ€˜The Lootersโ€™ in your life?
– Do you value yourself, your mind, and the products of your labour? Do the individuals, organisations and entities in your life value you?
– Are you receiving a fair trade for the products of your mind? Or do you have a Looter piggybacking on your success?
– What is the definition of virtue? Are you a person who cares more about appearing to be virtuous, or actually being virtuous?
– Do you resent the skills, abilities or achievements of others?

And finally, the last of my words will be addressed to those heroes who might still be hidden in the world.
