Sex and Gender

Open Question: IF I don’t believe in gender in the way it is used in our society right now, does that make me essentially without gender?
First of all, no, your beliefs about reality or how those beliefs conform or disconform to society do not control reality. What is is. Existence is primary. Our opinions or ignorance about events or qualities or characteristics (eg gender) doesn’t cause reality to alter. Sticking your head in a paper bag doesn’t make the universe vanish.
Gender has always referred to the voluntary expression of sexuality. It’s something humans have always done. When you look to Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallone or MacGyver or your Dad as masculine role models you are constructing your own gender identity. Humans have always done this so you can just relax about that. The point is to get it right, for it to be generative rather than degenerative.
You’re absolutely right that once our society figured out they were free to choose and responsible for that choice they spazed out. People are out there identifying their gender as all sorts of weird and messed up things; We’ve all seen. They were used to being told who to be and how to think by the Church or the State and were not rehabilitated into being free range humans. That’s the trouble with Post Modernism- questions and demolishes old dogmatic nonsense but doesn’t front up with a new and rational set of answers for a code to live by. (That’s why lots of people did a 180 and ran back into the church and the arms of the dead God.)
Forget this junk about pretending gender is biologically determined. We are self-made characters but if we don’t accept that responsibility in the first place we’ll certainly bugger it up.
