Maoris Now Exempt From Paying Rates

July 26, 2021

By NZB3

Some Maoris realised long ago that paying rates was optional for them. There was no way to force them. So, good for them, they didn’t pay.

The unpaid tens of millions have been going up and up. Non-Maoris would be evicted, their land and home sold off Penny Bright-style.

“All unpaid rates arrears on Māori freehold land will be written off under new legislation..The announcement was made by Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta on Sunday and greeted by loud cheers from an audience of about 300” – Law change to scrap rates arrears on Māori land, NZ Herald

“If rates have gone unpaid for six years, during which time collection through the court system is unsuccessful, the council must write it off as “bad debt”. Councils are legally barred from starting court action to collect payments beyond that six-year mark.” – Bad debt: Gisborne District Council writes off $773,000 in unpaid rates

This year Labour 6.0 passed a law to have all that debt written off. Why not? It’s not ‘their’ money, it was a revenue stream for Local Government. All the Maori owners need to do is not pay for 6 years and their rates debt must be written off.

If you’re a Maori don’t pay your rates bill. Instead, work to help the other races of New Zealand achieve this status too so we can all be so free.
