Ashley Bloomfield to Retire

April 20, 2022

By NZB3

The medical theatre part of the Cinders and Ash duo, Ashley Bloomfield, is to “retire” according to headlines. That word, retire, conjures up an image of an old man literally retiring to his rocking chair in the provinces leaving politics alone. Perhaps he’ll just put on an apron for the local school PTA not to be heard of again outside the local rag newspaper (if it hasn’t been cancelled yet) and let the knighthoods¹ and honours roll in?

I doubt this very much.

“Dr Ashley Bloomfield will step down from his role as Director-General of Health at the end of July…Bloomfield came to public prominence in early 2020 at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. He’s become a familiar face to Kiwis at press conferences over the past two years – leading Aoteroa’s respose to the pandemic.” – Ashley Bloomfield stepping down as Director-General of Health in July, One News (April 2022)

I believe we will see him again in the mainstream, perhaps very soon. With the new Labour 6.0 Feudalism Reboot of the Health System it may simply be that, like many others, Bloomfield is ditching the dying legacy District Health Board system early to prepare for the new Current Thing (a Central Government Health System.) Apart from this, I predict we’ll see him pop up in 5-10 years as the well paid author of ‘The Bloomfield Report’ by Sir Doctor Ashley Bloomfield.

“He signalled with the Commissioner late last year he intended to step down before his term officially ended on June 11, 2023. The Public Service Commissioner will appoint an acting Director-General before Dr Bloomfield finishes on July 29, 2022.” – ibid

Ah, but that’s not the most important value in Ashley moving on now. The best thing for The State in his convenient retirement is that he will no longer be appearing for questioning. That cannot come too soon so I think Dr Ash and his mouth will be retired long before July. The ultimate non-disclosure is being dead but being professionally dead for a while is a civilised runner up.

Out of ‘respect’ for his hard work and the new technical fact that Ashley will not be the Q&A guy any more there will be lots of dirty issues that he will take to his professional grave. The people, the media, and reviews will want to know about the dirty deeds done dirt cheap by the Cinders and Ash duo to New Zealand these past 2 years. By going into Silent Running mode those time-consuming and dangerious questions are neatly being dodged by Sir Ashley of the monogramed sock and garter.
